ORGANIZATION BRINGS TECHNOLOGY TO COMMUNITY

I recently got the opportunity to volunteer at a nonprofit organization called WeCareTucson. WeCareTucson refurbishes donations of old electronics and medical equipment to donate to needy people in the Tucson community.

WeCareTucson’s mission is to remove the barriers that block people from having access to education and health necessities. They refurbish technology of any kind, and they also recycle to keep items out of the landfills. People can donate their personal technology to WeCareTucson, such as laptops, phones, towers, printers, etc. The refurbished electronics are sold at theirstore available to everyone. They also have a loaner bank of medical equipment, in which the equipment itself is free of charge, but there is an administrative fee upon pickup time. WeCareTucson has a variety of medical equipment such as wheelchairs, crutches, bandages, adult diapers, toothbrushes, and other items.

WeCareTucson hosts a free, annual tech youth camp at their store for middle schoolers in grades 6th–8th every summer in July. This camp teaches children what’s inside a computer, and basic cybersecurity measures and practices. WeCareTucson did a “School Day Out” for children in October—they went to places like the Pima Community College cyberwarfare range. There is also the possibility that WeCareTucson will break the camp down into two groups: cybersecurity and what a PC contains.

Also, WeCareTucson hosts basic computer classes that are open to everybody. In fact, I was one of the instructors that taught people how to safely navigate the internet and talked about cybersecurity. As well as the store, these classes are also sometimes held at the Medicare Store on Grant and Swan.

Every time I have volunteered here, I always have an extremely fun time because playing with technology is one of my favorite hobbies. The WeCare - Tucson associates are very knowledgeable, friendly, and always willing to help. WeCareTucson is located at 3029 N. Stone Ave. Go to wecaretucson.org  to find more information, or call (520) 514-1588. WeCareTucson is a wonderful place for people to buy used technology or to learn the basics of computers, so I would highly recommend coming here.
