The Story of this year’s artwork: the Turtle and the Shark

On the Island of Tuiuila (American Samoa), near the small Village of Vaitogi, there is a U-shaped lava rock cove with a beautiful small beach on its north side and a high cliff on the south.

The cove frequently sees powerful waves with the water thrown high into the air. It was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

This place is believed to be the site of the island’s best known and popular tale: The Turtle and the Shark..
