Celebrate the 18th annual Lights On Afterschool Oct. 26, 2017!
Launched in October 2000, Lights On Afterschool is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities. The effort has become a hallmark of the afterschool movement and generates media coverage across the country each year.
The Afterschool Alliance organizes Lights On Afterschool to draw attention to the many ways afterschool programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, Tae Kwon Do and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

Details: Approximately 3,700 students in the Paradise Valley Unified School District will participate in our Lights On Afterschool celebration on Thursday, 10/26, through Mascot Club and After the Bell (21st Century) programming. Students have created a unity banner that will go on display in the district to recognize the impact of afterschool programming. On Thursday, students will engage in a hands-on, stem-based program featuring optical illusions. Each afterschool program (throughout the district) will view an interactive video that explains how optical illusions work and how lights, colors, and patterns can trick our eyes! Then, students will create their own optical illusions and discover how movement can also impact an optical illusion. Finally, students will bring home a second optical illusion to share with their friends and families. Afterall, it's pretty amazing what students can do with the Lights On Afterschool in Paradise Valley Schools!
