Whenever India is mentioned on social media, people immediately tend to highlight the worst aspects of a truly diverse culture and country, saying, “Oh, I’m glad I wasn’t born there,” or “I can immediately smell the video.”

Despite being born Indian-American, I kind of believed what social media was saying, since I didn’t believe it applied to me. Growing up in America, surrounded by a blend of cultures, I never felt out of place. I was with Indians, but I was also with my East Asian friends, Hispanic friends, and anyone in between.

I had the opportunity to sit down with Tomas Smith, the director of process improvements at Mobile Meals. I learned about the purpose, impact, and future direction the organization wants to take.

In a unique calendar alignment, two major cultural holidays—the Hindu festival of Diwali and the Western holiday of Halloween—coincided this year, creating a vibrant tapestry of traditions across communities worldwide! The Hindu calendar is based off the lunar cycle. Because of this, having both holidays fall on the same day, although rare, has happened before, leaving many Indian-American families grappling between the choice of Halloween or Diwali. Many people of Indian-American origin decided to choose a fusion of their two cultures.
