I read an article titled “World’s first electric autonomous cargo ship takes to the water” by Nick Lavars. This article was published in November 2021 by New Atlas. It talks about electric and autonomous transportation.
I like this article because I love working on anything solar and electric. Also, this is a topic I am very interested in because at my school we are researching solutions connected to cargo transportation. I am focusing on autonomous and solar powered vehicles for my solution to problems with cargo.
Yara Birkeland is the first zero crew electric ship in the world. It goes 10 to 15 miles an hour and is 262 feet long. In 2022, the ship will start commercial operations. Their idea is to use ammonia, a common chemical, as the renewable fuel source. “Ammonia has the potential to become the leading fuel for long-distance shipping globally,” said Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, CEO of Yara Clean Ammonia.
“We are proud to be able to showcase the world’s first fully electric and self-propelled container ship...It will cut 1,000 tons of CO2 and replace 40,000 trips by diesel-powered trucks a year,” says Svein Tore Holsether, CEO of Yara International.
