I recently toured the Valley Metro Mobility Center. Parked inside the building is a real bus along with a bus stop. The bus was driven in when the office was being built, and the center was built around it! The Valley Metro Mobility Center is dedicated to helping the elderly and those with impairments regain their independence—it helps them to ride Valley Metro transportation, such as buses and light rail. Between 430 and 530 people come to the Mobility Center each month, which means that many people are gaining the ability to use public transportation.
We attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Alice Chaiten Baker Center for Art Education at the Tucson Museum of Art (TMA) on Jan. 12. The TMA education center was recently renovated because of a $1.5 million donation by Alice and Paul Baker.
Mrs. Baker has been on the museum board of trustees for 32 years and participated in classes at TMA when she was in high school. She spoke about her passion for art and the reason that she and her husband support the Tucson Museum of Art.
Although not a national holiday, some states do observe Susan B. Anthony Day. Those states are California, Florida, New York, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Anthony’s state of birth, Massachusetts.
February 15 is a celebration of Susan B. Anthony’s birthday. Anthony was born in 1820 in Adams, MA. Her father was a farmer and later became a cotton mill manager. Her mother, Lucy, came from a family that fought in the American Revolution and served in the Massachusetts government. Anthony had seven brothers and seven sisters.
I read a book called “Douglas, You Need Glasses!” It was written by Ged Adamson and published by Random House. Douglas is a dog with very bad eyesight. His eyesight is so bad that he chases a leaf thinking it is a squirrel. He also does not see the warning sign and hewalks through wet cement.
Nancy is Douglas’ owner and she takes him for an eye exam. Douglas goes through one whole cabinet of glasses and finally finds the perfect pair. After he puts on the glasses, Douglas can see things that he couldn’t see before.
The Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism is given to a recipient each year. According to Mark Lodato, Associate Dean at the ASU Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, “It is a very special honor to receive this award.”

On Dec. 5, the Tucson Arizona Boys Chorus had the pleasure of performing at the annual National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. This was the first time in 28 years that they were invited to do so, but the third time in their history.
Entomophagy is the technical term for eating insects. Some people may be really grossed out by the thought of eating insects, but insects are a common form of protein in many countries, and, as my class found out, they can actually be quite good.
A Gilbert Police Officer took part in Over the Edge, a fundraiser for Special Olympics on Dec. 7, 2019. This event took place at Cityscape, the fourth tallest building in Phoenix.
