MOVIE SCREENING WAS KRAKEN-SIZED FUN!

We went to Harkins to preview the new movie “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” on Saturday, June 24. The movie was created by Dreamworks, who also made “Shrek,” “Trolls,” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” The movie is rated PG. I think older kids will like it more.

Before we watched the movie we got popcorn and went to the special table to take pictures. We were given ocean tattoos and movie activity sheets. When we got in the theater we got seated in recliner chairs. Then we went down to the radio station booth at the front and we got to do a dance party and we played a game of rock paper scissors. If you won, or even if you didn’t, you still got a prize. Then there was ocean and animal trivia with the Wildlife World Zoo.

In the movie, the main character Ruby is in high school and she is trying to fit in. She is hiding a secret—she is a kraken. Ruby wants to ask a guy named Connor to prom but Ruby’s mom won’t let her go to Prom because it is on the water and Ruby is not allowed in the water.

When an accident reveals Ruby’s secret she must learn how to use her kraken powers. There is also a mermaid called Chelsea who tries to be Ruby’s friend. Is she a good friend? You’ll have to watch the movie!

My review is: I liked that the movie was funny and sad. The characters were colorful but not what I expected. I really liked the music.
