Last fall, my family and I went to the 13th annual Tucson Comic-Con. There were many things to do. One we enjoyed most was the scavenger hunt. It took us all three days of the event to complete the task, but we did it by exploring Comic-Con, talking to people at the booths, participating in panel presentations, and talking to attendees, just like us.

In the magical town of Grimlock Lane, a boy named William noticed commotion in the street. In the book “The Night Gardener,” written by the Fan Brothers (Terry and Eric Fan), there is a mysterious gardener who makes topiaries of animals during the night. Topiaries are the art of trimming trees or shrubs into objects.

“The Bookwanderers” is about how Matilda (Tilly) Pages finds out that there is more to her grandparent’s bookshop and her mother’s mysterious disappearance than she could have imagined.

When Tilly sees her favorite book characters like Alice from Wonderland and Anne of Green Gables, she finds out that she can bookwander into any book. She can use this ability to find the truth about what happened to her mother many years ago.

We went to Harkins to preview the new movie “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken” on Saturday, June 24. The movie was created by Dreamworks, who also made “Shrek,” “Trolls,” and “How to Train Your Dragon.” The movie is rated PG. I think older kids will like it more.

“Humanity is at the mouth of a long, dark tunnel, and right at the end of the tunnel, it’s a little star. That’s hope.” Those are the words of Dr. Jane Goodall, an English primatologist and anthropologist. She was in Arizona in June to promote her new documentary, “Jane Goodall: Reasons for Hope,” playing at the Arizona Science Center through September 1. I had the opportunity to see the documentary and be part of a media panel interview with Dr. Goodall and David Lickley, the writer, producer and director.

On June 19, the inaugural commemoration of the Juneteenth federal holiday was held at the University of Arizona. Juneteenth commemorates the arrival of General Gordon Granger to Galveston, Texas, to deliver the message of the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. To celebrate the 158th Juneteenth, an audience gathered at Centennial Hall to remember the history, resilience and culture of Black people and communities.
